The Wallflower’s Bringing Down the Horse is another album I took on my long drive across many states. Two things about this album, it is a great album to sing along to in your best hick/Hank WIlliams Sr. voice and I never noticed that it is a concept/thematic album.
The songs each tell a part of the story, out of sequence. If it were a movie, it would be much like Pulp Fiction in order and it would be about a guy and all his various relationships with women. The girlfriends would all be played by the same actress but have different names because he sees all women as interchangeable. He started out a wanderer, found a stripper whom he made into a girlfriend whom he elevated to the status of a Cinderella princess and finally an angel. The vehicle with one headlight is his motorcycle name Elvis which he references many times in various songs. It is a metaphor for his relationships. They are always moving but never really going anywhere. He believes that they can make it home or to a stable relationship but as we find out he ends up crashing and perhaps killing his chances at love. There are some introspective songs in the middle and end of the album i which he analyzes his major relationship flaws and because the story is told out of continuity, the end can easily flow into the beginning and he can repeat his cycle ad infinitum.
